Art Quilts at the Adobe in Vista

Pacific Quilt Artists are a juried group of studio artists in San Diego County who are dedicated to making, exhibiting, and promoting the quilt as an art form. Members frequently show their work at juried national and international visual art exhibits, as well as prestigious art quilt venues.

Relámpago is Spanish for “lightning”, referring to the moments of illumination captured directly on solid metal plates for this exhibition of Omar Lopex’s intimate tintype photographs. A photograph documents reality without context: what appears to be a wide variety of traditional family portraits exploring different representations of familial relationships, is in fact a complex game of pretend. “Fun with Glass” with Kate O’Brien
January 17, 24, 31, and Feb. 7, 2015, Saturdays, 10am - 1 pm
In this four part class, participants will be introduced to the art of glass fusing and slumping. Students will complete three projects of their choosing using System 96 glass. The instructor will discuss the fundamentals of fusing and glass kiln firing schedules. Written instructions will be provided to each participant and all tools needed will be provided during class time.
Classes are 4 sessions of 3 hours per session. A $30 materials fee, which includes kiln firings, will be paid to the instructor at the first class. The materials fee is $30 paid by the student and $10 paid by the Guild for a total of $40. Cost is higher because fusible glass is most costly and there will be multiple firings. Paint and Fold Your Own Poinsettia at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum
Every Saturday and Sunday in December, 12-4pm
Local Families learn about the history of the poinsettia and how important it was to North County San Diego. Paul Ecke bought property in the 1920s and turned the relatively unknown plant into the holiday icon it is today. To celebrate this heritage, families paint and fold their own poinsettias and take them home for a wonderful holiday decoration.
Each weekend there are free hands-on experiences that highlight a particular era of San Dieguito history. The historic eras and corresponding activities include: Native American Period rock painting and acorn grinding; Rancho Period adobe brick making, cattle roping and soap making; Pioneer Days butter making, washboard clothes washing and quilt making; Flower Growing Period seed planting, plant identification and plant dyeing; and Surfing, concern for ocean ecology events with balsa mini-surfboard shaping, kelp cookie making, and ocean awareness experiences.

Dr. Seuss Comes To The Centennial

The San Diego History Center, located in Balboa Park, launched its Centennial Celebration year late November with a marquee exhibition celebrating San Diego’s renowned local author, Theodor Geisel. Theodor “Seuss” Geisel is quite simply the most beloved children’s book author of all time. Geisel wrote and illustrated 44 books for children. While Theodor Geisel died on September 24, 1991, Dr. Seuss lives on, inspiring generations of children of all ages to explore the joys of reading. Entitled Ingenious! The World of Dr. Seuss, the exhibition, developed in cooperation with locally-based Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. and Chase Art Companies, features artwork by Geisel, some inspired by San Diego locales. This whimsical fun-filled exhibition also includes family-friendly activities based on Dr. Seuss books’ underlying themes: Literacy, the Environment, Family, and Community. The Navarra Family and Jerome’s Furniture are sponsoring the event.
The exhibition is lively and whimsical, using state-of-the-art technology and engaging visitors in exploratory and immersive experiences. The exhibition features rare early works, ephemera, illustration, and editorial cartoons, as well as two newly released Geisel illustrations. The Seuss-land gallery features giant bronze Seuss character sculptures, anchoring interactive family activities that emphasize the important themes and innovative nature of Seuss books. A Dr. Seuss reading nook features weekend readings by local celebrity readers.
The History Center’s Celebrate San Diego! exhibition line-up also includes: Masterworks of the Exposition Era, featuring renowned artwork displayed at the 1915 Art Exhibition; San Diego Invites the World, a multi-media commemoration of the 1915 Exposition; and a new documentary film on the History of Balboa Park, funded in part by the San Diego Tourism Authority (SDTA) and the San Diego Tourism Marketing District.

San Diego Model Railroad Museum Exhibits a Lego Trains and Buildings

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum (SDMRM) is one the largest indoor model railroad displays in the world and is the only accredited railroad themed museum in the U.S.A. The individual HO and N scale layouts are among the largest of their type. Construction of the model railroads is accomplished by volunteer engineers, electricians, muralist and amazing craftsmen. Since it’s opening to the public in March of 1982, the museum is approaching 3 million visitors.
In addition to their world-class exhibits, SDMRM prides itself with a collection of historic trains of all gauges, a wealth of images and books, and is dedicated to educational programming, family events, and tours. Come and see the L-Gauge Museum's display of Lego Trains and Buildings. This impressive display features early to mid-century trains built entirely out of Legos. Be amazed at the detail and craftsmanship that has been put into each display.
